Do you commute by bike? How often?
I don’t commute by bike. I work in Sacramento, and it’s jut not possible. Not for me, anyway.
Do you ride recreationally? How far?
I don’t really ride recreationally. I prefer to have a purpose, even if it’s just going to the gym, or Starbucks, or taking my son to a park in a trailer. My average trip is between 5-8 miles.
What is your favorite route?
The Secret Ravine trail. It starts behind my house, so it’s convenient. Unfortunately most trails don’t go anywhere.
How do you like riding in Roseville?
To be honest, I don’t. The drivers seem to be oblivious to the fact that people might be walking or biking. I’m not saying they are ignoring pedestrians or bicyclists on purpose, but it’s not part of the culture here.
If you could fix two things immediately, what would they be?
I think it’s too late for that. The area is already developed and it wasn’t done intelligently. The residential areas are not integrated with the commercial and business areas, and they are connected by high-speed expressways. The traffic has been getting worse every year, drivers are getting more impatient, and I don’t think there’s any hope in that respect. Just for the sake of answering the question, here are two suggestions:
- make it illegal to drive and talk on a cell phone
- make it illegal to turn right on a red light. Get rid of the turning lanes.
(Violators should have their cars impounded and forced to walk or bike for a week. How’s that J ?)
Have you found BikingRoseville to be useful?
Yes I have. I also found the classes useful, even though I only took the first half. The effort is greatly appreciated - thank you very much!
Do you ride in the winter? If so what clothing do you use?
I do. Winters here are very mild. I use synthetic clothing and avoid cotton, so I don’t get wet. I don’t have any fancy clothing for cycling though.
Do you ride in the dark? If so, what equipment do you use?
I avoid it as much as possible, but I do have lights on one of my bikes.
