Do you commute by bike? How often?
When I’m healthy, I ride in 3 times a week (Monday, Tuesday, and Friday). My commute is about 13 miles one way. Right now I have a stress fracture in my left femur that I sustained while running this past fall. I am hoping to be fully recovered soon!
Do you ride recreationally? How far?
I usually ride about 175 miles per week, which includes my 80 or so commute miles.
What is your favorite route?
One of my favorite rides is from the north side of Folsom where I live, up to Auburn, and then I do hill training on Old Foresthill Road and around Lake Clementine.
How do you like riding in Roseville?
Riding in Roseville can be a challenge. You really have to make sure you are visible to the cars going 50+ mph on the six lane expressways. I try to use as many residential streets as possible between Roseville and Folsom.
If you could fix two things immediately, what would they be?
1. The Blue Oaks interchange eastbound over highway 65 is ridiculous. If you look at it closely, there is a bike lane on the bridge itself, which basically starts from nowhere. There is no safe way to cross the intersection at Industrial and the southbound highway 65 onramp on Blue Oaks. No matter how you ride across there, even if you use all three crosswalks, you basically have cut across freeway onramp traffic to get to that bike lane. The City of Roseville says that since it’s a highway overpass, this is out of their jurisdiction. That is incorrect. The City of Roseville owns the intersection at Blue Oaks and Industrial, and the problem starts there. They need to fix that first. And then if the bridge over 65 is under Cal-Trans, the City of Roseville needs to represent cyclists in the effort to get that problem fixed. The problem begins with Roseville.
2. Placer County needs to stop taking crosswalks away from cyclists and pedestrians. Having an intersection go from 4 crosswalks to 3 or less is unsafe. This has happened at several intersections in Roseville and in other parts of Placer County. This practice needs to stop.
Have you found BikingRoseville to be useful?
Yes! I enjoy reading the postings and articles.
Do you ride in the winter? If so what clothing do you use?
Yes I do ride in winter. I usually use a windbreaker or vest, full gloves and leggings. Was there a winter this year? J
Do you ride in the dark? If so, what equipment do you use?
Yes, I do commute in the dark. I use a NiteRider light that I can recharge at night. I also use reflector tape on my bike and helmet, as well as a flashing rear taillight.
